Further below is the Monumental Sculpture I made for the Library in Topanga, California, a mountain community between Santa Monica and Malibu in the  Los Angeles area. I made it up in  Northern California near Oregon and transported it down to Topanga where I had once lived for 14 years.

”Only in my Head     Where Cosmic Lands are seen     I once lived in a Mystic Land     As if in a Dream.”

Since the Sculpture was for the New Library, I thought about Writing and how it came about, and how we take it for granted, even though  this giant leap for humanity did not come easy.  It started mainly in cuneiform or marked symbols onto  soft clay tablets.  In Ancient Times. if a writing was important and people wanted it to last a long time, the clay tablet would be fired in a kiln, turning it in to a tile like form.  This in essence was how the first Libraries of the world came about.  So, I decided to incorporate Tile into the theme.  The coming about of  Writing seemed like the Flowering of innovative thinking, thus Flower Books seemed appropriate.  I used Dragonflies to enhance the theme, since Dragonflies can see in front of themselves, behind, and to the sides at the same time, a 360 degree view, and books had the capacity to do the same for everyone.   Besides that,  Dragonflies look cool and added a spark to the theme of the work.

This is a Sculpture I made for the Topanga Library in Topanga California, 2012 . It’s about 30 feet high with the vines going up to the roof line.

3 Book-Flowers representing the Flowering of Mankind’s development, when the idea of  WRITING came about thousands of years ago.  I made it in Steel and Tile.  The Dragonflies have 6 ft wingspans. A huge undertaking since I did the Grunt work, Cutting, Torqueing, Grinding & Welding by myself.  However, My Daughter helped me with the Tiles and Best of All with many ideas and her Feedback. Both our names are on the Plaque.

Below are the Lighting Sconce Sculptures I made for the Interior Walls of the Library.  I can’t seem to locate a picture of the other Turtle I made.
